The essentials

Everything you need to know before booking.

A French overseas department in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Réunion was uninhabited until the 17th century, when France took possession and developed it through coffee, then sugar plantations. Today it is a fully European region — euro, French institutions, modern infrastructure — wrapped in a wild, volcanic landscape. French is the official language, with Réunion Creole spoken everywhere in daily life.

Home to around 870,000 inhabitants, Réunion is a true melting pot — African, Malagasy, Indian, Chinese and European roots blend into one of the most harmonious multicultural societies in the region. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage site: more than 40% of its territory is protected national park, with three vertiginous cirques — Cilaos, Mafate and Salazie — carved around the dormant Piton des Neiges (3,071 m), and the spectacular Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes.

Réunion has two seasons. The cool, dry winter (May to November) is ideal for hiking, with mild coastal temperatures of 17–28°C — the best window to visit. Summer (December to April) is hotter and more humid, with the chance of tropical showers, especially in the highlands and on the east coast.

Entry requirements

  • Not Schengen — Réunion is an overseas department of France but is not part of the Schengen area.
  • Visa by nationality — requirements depend entirely on your nationality; short stays of up to 90 days are generally either visa-exempt or require a specific visa for the French overseas departments.
  • Accommodation proof — a Letter of Confirmation from your hotel or other registered accommodation, covering the entire stay, is required.
  • Return ticket — a return flight ticket is required.
  • Tourist Tax — a compulsory tourist tax applies per person per day, from 1.50 to 4 EUR depending on accommodation category.
  • Travel insurance — valid insurance covering the entire stay is required.

Good to know

Your passport must be valid for the full duration of the trip, and the euro is used everywhere — making Réunion one of the most straightforward Indian Ocean destinations to enter.
